This book is certainly a much grimmer tale than its fairy tale origin, as is common in YA retellings, but it’s also more unique in its basis and plot than most novels of its nature. And the dreamland the characters are trapped in adds its own layers of dark intrigue, blurring the lines between imagination and reality. Beyond this, the book also humanizes the plot of Sleeping Beauty’s tale– how deeply some of the details might actually affect its characters, such as the way Aurora Rose’s three fairy “aunts” kept the truth from their young ward for sixteen years. This is especially important in regard to Aurora Rose, as she is the heroine, but also fun to see in characters like Prince Phillip and even Maleficent herself. It does a fantastic job of expanding upon and humanizing the characters that, in simpler versions of the fairy tale, aren’t explored very far. Once Upon a Dream is an entertaining read complete with action, good characters, and of course, plenty of magic. This journey results in detailed character development that transforms her identity as the protagonist by the end of the book. I loved how Aurora Rose’s introspective journey is linked to her physical one. This world inside her head is the gateway to great power, but also great obstacles as she’s forced to contend with not only agents of Maleficent’s dark powers but also the all-too real barriers of doubt, fear, and uncertainty. There are currently 12 books, with four more set to be released between 20. They are written by Liz Braswell, Jen Calonita, Elizabeth Lim and more recently Farrah Rochon.
